March 5 was a big day for us students. We received Rainbow Trout eggs from SCWA after Cory picked the up fron the Don Clausin Fish Hatchery. We were disapointed that we did not get Steelhed eggs like 6th graders normally get. That occured because the fish hatchery did not receive enough Steelhead because of the drought to spare eggs to classes. These rainbow trout eggs were sterilized so they can't reproduce and ruin the genetics of the steelhead. We were all surprised that these eggs were smaller than Steelhead eggs. Steelhead and Rainbow Trout have the same genetics, but Steelhead can go to the ocean and Rainbow Trout are land-locked. The class will be raising the fish until they are fingerlings. We will then release them into Lake Ralphine instead of the Mark West Creek.
