Mr. Graves' class is currently reading a wonderfu novel called The Major, the Poacher, and the Wonderful One-Trout River It is about a young boy who must fish to feed his family, but lives in an area where a man named Major Quillane made it strictly forbidden to bait fish, which is Plummey's (the main character) only way to survive. While my class was reading, I found that we do do things much differently nowadays than in 1985, when the book came out. You see, the Major was trying to make "the perfect trout stream" by taking different plants and animals and putting them in a stream that he made. If you live in California, you probably have some blackberry bushes growing nearby. However, they weren't native to California, and now they are taking over the landscape. What seems like a good plan to the Major back then is probably going to be a major (haha) problem in the future. The different plants, animals, and insects that the Major is introducing into what he calls the "perfect river" will most likely take over the landscape in the future. The Major tried to create perfection in the book, but what it shows is that the author severely over looked the impact his actions will have. I still love the book, it is very well written and look forword to seeing how it will end. Who knows, maybe he will learn the lesson the hard way. If you are a fan of Amazon, find it here. Or if you are a fan of Barnes and Noble, find it here.
